Evolutionary scientists argue about making their doubts public

At news.genethink.com, I found an interesting article entitled Are you Suffering under the Creationist Terror Regime, in which the author blanches at requests from his fellow evolutionary scientists to not give the impression that there are competing evolutionary theories:

If there’s one thing we don’t want, it’s for people to get the idea that there’s a bunch of evolutionary theories out there, and that they’re all equal.

In rebellion against this fearful politicization of science, the author responds:

So, …. are we all forced into silence by the creationists ? The advice is not to use a term because it illuminates that there are new ways of thinking about an existing (and accepted) theory. We cannot speak in fear of being misinterpreted ? Such a coward attitude !

And he is right.  While some may (rightly) conclude that evolution is far from a sure thing when doubts are expressed, those who are confident that it is true should have no fear of openly challenging the orthodoxy around evolution.

What's tragic is that the author blames the Creationists for creating a climate in which people are afraid to openly discuss problems with evolution.  I'm sure his perspective is that Creationist charlatans take scientists' intellectual 'honesty' in 'refining' evolution and spin them as reasons to doubt and see evolution as a Theory in Crisis

And while some may make this error, his censuring friend has a point too - if both pro- and anti-evolutionary thinkers take every superficial study or doubt as foolproof evidence and spin it to the masses as a sure support/contradiction of evolution, perhaps scientists should keep such discussions behind closed doors out of prudence.  Our current days are very polarized and factionalized.

The author boldly proclaims that we should resist the 'terror' of the Creationists

But, why be afraid, - facts are on our side. We are free to safely discuss the implications of these facts. There is no danger in this.

There is no danger, of course, if you are not open to the possibility that evolution is wrong.  He's so confident that it is true, he can't even conceive of an intellectual reason to doubt evolution.  That people OR scientists would reject evolution based on the *data* is inconceivable to him.  He is truly a likely victim of the Mass Delusion of evolutionary faith.

And the real oversight in the author's lament is that he ignores what happens to acadmics who *actually* doubt evolution instead of just offering up refinements of it - they get smacked down.  I'm glad to see that he encourages intellectual honesty and openness, but what about true unbelief?
