Staying on the same Page

Dr. Frank Page, pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church in Taylors, SC, was reelected without opposition to his second term as Southern Baptist Convention President. After the announcement was made, Page seemed genuinely humbled and on the verge of tears behind the podium.

He has been a consistent, conciliatory and conservative convention head (How's that for Baptist alliteration?) for the past year. This is not just important for the SBC, but also for evangelicals as Page leads the largest Protestant denomination in America and is often considered the spokesperson for evangelicalism.

He is considered the spokesperson for evangelicals? Perhaps in Baptist circles, but I've never even heard of him! Those I think of as spokespersons are the ones that regularly appear on TV, like Mohler, Dobson, Robertson, and maybe Hybels.

Don't get me wrong, Page looks like a great and accomplished guy, but when and where has he ever spoken for evangelicals?

He has been featured on numerous television programs in the past year, since his election. Those others are more prominent and have been doing "it" longer, but the SBC President is similar to the US President in that Bush is the de facto leader of the free word. The SBC head becomes the leader of the evangelical world.

One instance of him being the face of evangelicals is in a upcoming series by Discovery Channel (I think). They picked major religious leaders around the world (Pope, Dhali Lama, etc.) and Dr. Page was the one they followed around for evangelicals.

The reason you see the others more is because of their political stances. They (with the exception of Hybels - and how often do you see him now?) are featured because of their "controversial" stances on social issues and political ideas.
